Yes, its true....the name alone causes you to stop and scratch your head before saying, nice! YIP DECEIVER is the brainchild of Athens, GA multi-instrumentalist Davey Pierce. Yip Deceiver’s music is an exciting take on experimental dance pop with strong hooks, playful take on new wave, 80s R&B and electro pop. The other 50% of YIP is Nic Dobbratz, a classy singer/bass player/keyboardist who completes…Continue

The one thing I take pride in as a music lover is that I have a wide variety of tastes. After looking at Paste and Pitchfork's Best of 2011 lists, I realize I hadn't listened to the majority of their choices. The music I listened to and loved over the year is 1) mainstream (Adele's "21" is a phenomenal album, in case you didn't already know), 2) so obscure…Continue

It seems I was too quick to post yesterday about local artist and their Christmas songs. Because no sooner did I post, I managed to hear about two more releases.Continue

Every Listening Room is an exercise in gratefulness. Continually being humbled by talent of the artists and the service of the organizers, I am struck by the demands of work and sweat and heart that bear these special nights. This week in particular, they were short on baked goods. Once I heard this, my heart sank, because I realized I do so little to help in these efforts. In the least, I can bake some cookies, I thought. But I didn’t have the time, and…Continue

Christmas is fast approaching and what better way to get in the spirit of things than with some great local holiday music? Well, there's drinking heavily, but that works for every occasion.
After giving away a bunch of free songs over Thanksgiving, Dean Fields is at it again. This time, he went into the studio and recorded a few of his holiday favorites, and giving the gift of songs to his fans.…Continue

There's nothing I like better than discovering a new group and falling in love with their music. In all honesty, Pennsylvania rock band Three Legged Fox caught my eye because of the name, but the music instantly drew me in. It's simple, yet very intricate at the same time. I even postponed another post I was going to write about just so I could talk about these guys.
The band is in the midst of…Continue

And another music venue bites the dust.
Northside bar and country and honky-tonk music hangout Shenanigans will be closing at the end of the year and bands will still perform until New Year's. I could once again go into all the details on why this is awful and how Richmond is yet again losing another music treasure. But for the sake of my sanity and to keep spirits up, let's talk about the music they still have coming, shall we?
